The Prophet Isaiah spoke God's words to the people. In chapter five, Isaiah spoke six woes. Some Bible scholars believe Isaiah was speaking to the Southern Kingdom of Judah, while others believe he was speaking to the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Still others believe he was speaking to both kingdoms.
Either way, we know that the Word of God is living and active which means that the words Isaiah spoke pertain to us today just as much as they did when he spoke them many centuries ago.
First of all, we have to define the word "woe." Basically when you see the word "woe' in the Bible it means “pay attention!!" It is a warning that something you’re doing is not going to end well for you. When we read the word "woe" we need to understand everything that follows that word and take heed.
Isaiah 5, verses 8,11 & 20-23 read as follows:
"Woe to those who join house to house; They add field to field, till there is no place where they may dwell alone in the midst of the land!
Woe to those who rise early in the morning, That they may follow intoxicating drink; Who continue until night, till wine inflames them!
Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!
Woe to men mighty at drinking wine,
Woe to men valiant for mixing intoxicating drink, who justify the wicked for a bribe, and take away justice from the righteous man!"
