In John 8:32 Jesus says "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” People use these words every day. However, I'd venture to guess that most people use them as a retort to a lie that's been told or a sense of denial that's been revealed. There is a deeper meaning to the saying "the truth will set you free" as we will uncover today.

What Does The Bible Say?
"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." It was Jesus who said these words. Now, in order to fully grasp the Biblical context of what Jesus said, we have to also look at John 8:31, the preceding verse: "Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed." (And then verse 32) "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
Jesus was addressing those who believed in Him, but who may have had reservations about who He was. In other words, they were most likely on the fence about Jesus. They probably wanted to believe, but just couldn't take the next step which was "to abide in [His] Word" which in turn, would lead to becoming His disciples.
As a side note: If you are on the fence about Jesus, this is one of the most dangerous places to be. Why? Because if you've been made aware of what Jesus did for you, you have the responsibility to make a decision about who He is going to be in your life.
If we do choose to follow Jesus, we must abide in His word; this is the only choice we can make. This means that we immerse ourselves (live in, dwell in) His Word. His Word must become a permanent part of our lives. How can we know our Savior if we don't know what He is saying to us?

Result of Abiding in His Word
When we abide in His word, we become His disciples AND THEN we shall know the truth. You may ask: "What truth?" This truth is:
A deeper, spiritual truth that results from a relationship with Jesus.
A truth that is factually accurate, without error or bias.
A truth that is revealed through the Holy Spirit and consistent with the entire Bible.
The truth that sets us free.
What Does This Truth Set Us Free From?
The truth of Jesus Christ sets us free from the bondage of sin. This means that it releases us from the power and control that sin has over our lives. Accepting Jesus Christ gives us freedom from the consequences of sin and also promises eternal life for all who put their faith and trust in Him.
If You Want THE Truth, Look to Jesus

Today, people have watered down the definition of truth. Nowadays, truth is whatever people want it to be. Sayings like "live your truth" are used all the time. However, what if someone's "truth" isn't reality at all? What if someone chooses to believe something that has no roots in the truth? Should we just back down and never call it out? How far do we let people go in their thinking?
Truth cannot be fluid - something is either true or it isn't. Regardless of what some people may think, saying something over and over again doesn't change the status of whether it's true or not.
The only TRUTH in this world we can cling to is the truth found in God's Word. In John chapter 17, Jesus prays for His disciples. In verse 17 He prays to the Father to "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth." If you want to know what truth is, read the Bible. There you will find everything you need to know .
The Truth Will Set You Free
As long as you are clinging to the things of this fallen world, you will never truly be free. There will always be someone or something that lets you down. You will always be mislead, lied to or taken advantage of.
The "truth" of this world is filled with blatant lies and twisted words that are meant to steer you away from the absolute truth of Jesus Christ. It is not the truth of this world that sets you free, it is the truth of what Jesus Christ did for you on the cross.
Jesus tells us in John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." The world would have you believe that there are many roads to God; that all religions lead to heaven. This is NOT the truth. Jesus is TRUTH and He says that the only way to the Father is through HIM. THAT is THE truth.
If you have never put your trust in Jesus perhaps it's time to do so. Maybe you don't even know who Jesus is. If that's the case, CLICK HERE to learn more about Him. The only truth you need to know is that Jesus Christ gave up His life for you. This is the only truth that will surely set you free.
Blessings,
Amy
